Muscular Dystrophy — Helping You Obtain Social Security

Muscular dystrophy, or MD for short, is a degenerative muscle disease that causes the weakening of the skeletal muscles that control movement. There are many forms of muscular dystrophy that can inflict both adults and children. The main symptoms related to these medical conditions include:

  • Muscular weakness, wasting or atrophy
  • Muscle pain
  • Balance issues
  • Mobility problems
  • Respiratory and cardiac difficulties

There is no known cure for muscular dystrophy; it is important to provide evidence of your inability to maintain gainful employment when applying for Social Security. In order to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, you will need to provide objective medical evidence as to the severity of your symptoms and the effects that your illness has on your ability to work.

Work With Your Doctor to Treat Muscular Dystrophy

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will examine your medical evidence and the treatments you are receiving. While there is no cure for this disease, it is important to work with your doctor to devise a plan to treat your condition and document your symptoms. In order to qualify for SSDI or SSI, you must show that you have significant and persistent motor skill problems in at least two extremities which cause severe mobility problems. Failing to work with your doctor may jeopardize your ability to obtain benefits.

If you are one of the millions of Americans suffering from muscular dystrophy, you may be eligible for Social Security benefits. To learn more about your eligibility, why not contact one of our attorneys at the law firm of Jeffrey A. Rabin & Associates?
