In order to determine eligibility for veteran's benefits, you must first answer the question: Am I a veteran? For someone to qualify as a veteran, he or she must have served on active duty in the military and been released under conditions other than dishonorable. The following information highlights a few of the most significant benefit programs provided by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA):
- Compensation benefits: Veterans disability benefits include monthly compensation for servicemen or servicewomen who have a current permanent disability or temporary disability or medical condition caused or aggravated during active service in the military. A veteran cannot collect both pension benefits and veterans compensation benefits. If a veteran qualifies for both VA programs, he or she must choose one or the other. The veterans compensation benefits program poses the most challenges to veterans navigating the system.
- Pension benefits: Disabled veterans may be eligible for pension benefits - a needs-based payment that allows vets to receive monthly payments based on the veteran's income, disability, or age. The VA pension program does not require the veteran's disability to be service-connected.
- Educational benefits: Veterans are eligible for financial support to assist with educational expenses. Veterans receive a fixed amount of money, depending on whether their attendance is full-time or part-time.
- Health benefits: Veterans who are enrolled in VA health benefits are able to receive medical care from VA clinics, hospitals, medical centers, and other VA health care facilities nationwide. The veteran's family members may also be eligible for coverage.
- Survivor's benefits: The dependents of veterans, who died because of service-connected conditions, are entitled to financial support.
