We see this question come up time and time again from clients wondering if they are eligible for valuable disability benefits from the federal government. Because the Social Security system is so complex, the process can often times be frustrating-even for the most seasoned of people.

Social Security Administration Asking Congress for Increased Budget

In 2013, the Social Security Administration plans to provide 11 million Americans with $143 billion in Social Security disability benefits, and officials are asking Congress to provide them with enough funding to process the thousands of claims.

The SSA has asked Congress for $11.9 billion in 2013, an increase from the 2012 budget of $11.6 billion. Although SSDI benefits come from a trust fund, the SSA needs the money to run the program.

In 2011, the SSA had close to 760,000 disability claims pending and almost 790,000 hearings. […]

Long Waiting Period for Those Applying for SSDI

Individuals who can no longer work because of an illness or injury often find Social Security disability benefits to be hugely beneficial. However, millions of Americans are waiting to be approved. According to one news source, there are currently 1.8 million pending claims. The millions who are waiting to be approved for Social Security disability benefits sometimes have to wait as many as 800 days.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 13 percent of the 27 million Americans age 16 and older with disabilities are unemployed. […]
