In early December, disability attorney Jeffrey A. Rabin was featured on the Behind Our Door podcast with co-hosts Nancy Sussman and Julie Joyce. Together, they held a discussion over the question, “What if I’m unable to work because of my mental health?”
Over the course of this hour-long episode, Jeffrey A. Rabin breaks down the application process and gathering medical evidence for someone who is looking to file for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Social Security Income (SSI) for their mental health condition.
“The medical requirements for both programs require that we be able to prove that clients are suffering from symptoms that impact their day-to-day function for at least a year,” said Rabin. He continues by highlighting that there are individuals across the country who are able to work and manage their condition, but that isn’t the case for every American.
“They, [The Social Security Administration], are focused on the symptoms of your diagnosis and a person’s ability to sustain function. The focus is not on just your diagnosis.”
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 1 out of 5 Americans live with a mental illness. While most are able to manage their condition through healthy lifestyle habits and various medical treatments, others might struggle to complete daily tasks or function in a work setting.
