An individual can apply for Social Security Disability when they have become unable to work whether it is due to illness or injury. In fact, the number of people denied disability benefits who filed for an appeal was at an all-time high in 2011. During the last twelve months, there were 859,514 appeals made to the hearing level. Out of the 3.4 million initial disability applications that were completed throughout the fiscal year, two-thirds of the claims were denied.
The record high number of appeals can be understood in two different ways. You could see it as a problem, that people are being denied disability benefits. Or, you could see it as a positive sign, that more people are refusing to take no for an answer.
