Every November is a great opportunity to turn our attention to the millions of Americans who suffer from the effects of diabetes on a daily basis. Sufferers turn to our Chicago disability lawyers on a daily basis for help on receiving the compensation they deserve. This year, the focus of National Diabetes Month is promoting a healthy lifestyle after gestational diabetes.
Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes develops in some women while they are pregnant. While most of the time, this type of diabetes goes away after the baby is born, but mothers who have it are at a lifelong risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The children are also susceptible to developing this type of diabetes. Half of all women who had gestational diabetes end up developing type 2 diabetes.
If you’ve had gestational diabetes, make sure that you get tested within 12 weeks after your baby is born. After that, you should get tested once every 3 years to make sure it has not developed. You should also make your child’s doctor aware that you suffered from gestational diabetes.
Diabetes and Social Security Disability
The Social Security Administration (SSA) lists diabetes as an impairment that is covered. Qualifying for disability via diabetes includes proving the following:
-Suffering from diabetes mellitus
-Suffering from acidosis
-Suffering from neuropathy
-Suffering from diabetic retinopathy
Speaking to your doctor is one of the best ways that you can help prove that you are suffering from diabetes. Our Chicago disability lawyers can also help you collect the necessary documents to help establish your case. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are grounds for receiving social security disability.
