SSA launches new mobile-friendly site for smartphone users

Published on May 16th, 2013

Social Security beneficiaries who may not have a computer often times used their smartphones to check the status of their benefits and update information on the administration’s website. In fact, each year the Social Security Administration estimates that more than 35 million views of the SSA website are made via smartphones. But in the past the site was clunky and hard to navigate on the small screens of a cell phone.

In an effort to give beneficiaries more access to the administration’s website, the announced this month that a new mobile-friendly site has been launched for smartphone devices. The hope is that the new site will offer better accessibility to the millions of Americans currently receiving benefits.

People visiting the agency’s website won’t need to input a difference address in order to get to the mobile site. Simply typing in the SSA’s website from a smartphone will automatically redirect the user to the new mobile site. Visitors will be able to access all of the information found on the SSA’s main website and will even be able to create a mySocial Security account as well.

Acting Commissioner Colvin for SSA says that significant budget cuts recently have forced the agency to come up with better ways of providing service to beneficiaries across the nation, including here in Illinois. And with technology becoming the new standard in society, offeering a mobile-friendly website was the next natural transition. As Commissioner Colvin explains, it was a way of leveraging technology to help meet the evolving needs of the public.
