SSI Recipients Eligible for Wireless Access Program

Published on September 27th, 2011

Supplemental Security Income recipients may be eligible for additional assistance through a recently-established program. Illinois residents may be interested to learn about a group called Keeping Americans Connected to Opportunity (KACO). According to recent news report, growing numbers of low-income individuals are joining the group, which campaigns for the support of the federal wireless Lifeline program. The Lifeline program may prove an additional benefit for recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), as well as others who fall into the low income demographic.

Keeping Americans Connected to Opportunity is a Facebook-based campaign advocating the Lifeline program. Lifeline provides eligible Americans, which includes those receiving SSI, with access to telecommunications using a cell phone. Recipients are allotted a certain number of minutes for wireless use every month.

According to the news report, statistics have indicated the program has been beneficial for low income individuals as they search for work or struggle to keeping existing employment. The qualifications to participate in the Lifeline program vary on a state-by-state basis. However, in the majority of cases simply being eligible for Supplemental Security Income and other select assistance programs, achieves successful participation. Unfortunately, it is reported that only one-third of those eligible are enrolled.

While learning about this program may be beneficial for some Illinois residents, the legal complications surrounding Supplemental Security Income are often unavoidable. Sometimes, simply being eligible doesn’t put an end to the stress surrounding the application of benefits. As such, many individuals facing the struggles of a low income, and also find themselves facing difficulty attaining Supplemental Security Income, turn to the services of qualified legal counsel. Often, legal representation is a person’s best line of defense against the difficulties and red tape associated with Social Security concerns.
