Sufferers of Rheumatoid Arthritis May be Eligible for Disability Benefits

Published on March 15th, 2012

Social Security disability eligibility is limited to people who suffer from medical problems so severe that they are not able to perform work of any type. Applicants must provide medical documentation illustrating their inability to work for a period of time equaling, or expected to equal, 12 months.

People in Illinois may be unaware that rheumatoid arthritis is a condition that the Social Security Administration recognizes as an impairment. Those suffering from the condition may be able to receive Social Security Disability benefits.

One man began receiving disability benefits due to his rheumatoid arthritis in 2008. However, it was recently discovered that he had obtained a Social Security number illegally by stealing another man’s identity when he crossed the border into the United States in the 1970s.

The man led an otherwise law-abiding productive life, apart from his coming to the United States illegally. Although he pleaded guilty to criminal charges, he asserts that he is entitled to disability payments because he has now paid into the system for decades.

Those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis know how debilitating the condition can be. Some days it may even be hard for people to get out of bed. Fortunately, disability benefits give people a chance to lead a normal life.

Residents of Illinois that are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and who are thinking about applying for disability benefits may find it beneficial to consult with an attorney. The application process can be confusing, but an attorney will be able to guide an individual through the process and help them get the benefits they deserve.
