Teen organizes fundraiser to combat Huntington’s

Huntington's Disease is a condition that can ultimately prevent people from working. People suffering from it often apply for Social Security disability benefits, and in fact, it is scheduled to be added to the Social Security Administration's compassionate allowances list. Huntington's Disease typically shortens a person's life by about 20 years. It's an incurable condition that causes muscle coordination to deteriorate, and it can also lead to cognitive difficulties. It causes neurons to die off and often mimics symptoms of...

Which diseases qualify for Social Security disability benefits?

People often wonder, "If I have such-and-such disease, will I qualify for Social Security disability benefits?" Usually the answer is, "It depends." The Social Security Administration does have a compassionate allowances list, which identifies medical conditions that invariably qualify under the "listing of impairments" for benefits. The program was created so that people who are very sick can see their application process expedited. There is a wide variety of diseases on the compassionate allowances list, including liver cancer, Perry Syndrome...

Who determines disability, and how?

When people apply for Social Security disability benefits, there are a lot of unknowns. They might wonder, "Would I qualify for disability? How does the Social Security Administration determine if I am disabled? For that matter, who makes that decision?" These are all excellent questions. Generally, the SSA is required to gather a person's medical records and examine their health problems. Other aspects of their life are also considered, including their age and work and education experience. If officials with...

Baby boomers play big role in rise in benefits enrollment

The question has come up countless times in recent years: Why are so many more people applying for Social Security disability benefits than in years past? A recent study shows that it's a number of factors, including an aging baby boomer population and the number of women who have entered the workforce. The study, which was conducted by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, also found that the poor economy in recent years drove many to apply for benefits, and a...

Education Department to revamp disability rules

Imagine having student loan payments that you are barely able to keep up with. Then you get sick or in an accident, and suddenly you have mounting medical expenses, and are unable to work. Shouldn't your loans be forgiven if you are genuinely disabled? The answer is "yes" and federal laws are supposed to eliminate debt for those with lasting disabilities. But, the Education Department is finding out, it doesn't always work that way. While those relying on disability payments...

When can people apply for SSI?

A lot of people don't know when they can apply, or whether they would be eligible for, Social Security disability benefits. Many are also unsure whether they could receive Supplemental Security Income benefits, and what the differences are between all of these kinds of benefits. Both programs require that an applicant prove that a medical impairment prevents them from obtaining gainful employment for a period that lasted a year, or is expected to last that long. With disability benefits, it...

Number of people on disability surpasses New York population

It's no secret that the number of Americans relying on Social Security disability payments has been increasing dramatically over the last few years. But here's a sobering statistic: The number of people in the U.S. who rely on such benefits has now passed the entire population of New York City. The population of the Big Apple, at least according to the last census, is about 8,244,910. The number of people receiving federal disability insurance payments in June of this year...

Supreme Court’s decision has disability advocates cheering

When the Supreme Court ruled on the Affordable Care Act last week, there was a lot at stake for a lot of people. Of course, opinions were often divided by politics, but certain groups likely benefitted from the ruling, and those who depend on disability benefits fall into that category. In a 5-4 ruling last week, the court decided that the Affordable Care Act, or most of it, is constitutional, meaning that changes will be implemented between now and 2014....

Women see physical and financial risk of disability

A new study shows that women, apparently more so than men, are quite concerned about the impact a disability would have on their lives, both physically and financially. The study, conducted and released by the State Farm Center for Women and Financial Services at the American College, found that half of women surveyed believe that becoming disabled what have at least a "somewhat devastating" effect on their household. It's certainly a reality that more women are applying for Social Security...

I want to thank the Rabin legal team for their outstanding support since 2022 in helping Lindsay successfully getting through the SSI application, appeal(s), and finally approval process.

Everyone on your team has been extremely helpful, patient, professional, and diligent in working through this long and arduos process. The fact that Lindsay's file had approximately 3000 pages clearly shows the amount of time, work, and thoroughness the Rabin team has done for Lindsay. My wife, Lindsay and I cannot thank each of you enough for the support you have provided through this process. The SSI decision is a key step in Lindsay's continued progress in working through her disability. The positive outcome of yesterday's hearing clearly shows how your team's collective efforts over several years provided the information needed to have SSI approve the appeal. Thanks again to each and every one of you for your support.

My experience with Jeffrey A Rabin has been very good.

My approval of Social Security disability benefits came much quicker than I had expected. I first met with an associate on April 16, 2020 and we filed my application on May 21, 2020. My application was approved on August 3, 2020, only around a four month process. Even though we were at the beginning of this coronavirus outbreak when we started, it was easy to contact them and complete this process.

This was an outstanding experience for me from my first appointment to the last.

This Law Firm was very professional kind and considerate of me and my disability. They knew exactly what it was like for me in the real world and absolutely essential to help me explain that and my disability to the Social Security Administration. I definitely could not have done this without them and they have changed my life for the better forever. In my eyes they are the best social security disability law firm in Chicago and the suburbs.

I wanted to say thank you for everything that you did for me, I greatly appreciate it.

You believed in me when a lot and social security did not. I was a risk for you to pay for my medical records, not knowing if you would win, if I had not won you would have been out of a lot of money and time. I have known other attorney’s, and have worked with them in the past, but they are nothing like you! You are a very kind generous human being with compassion. I pray that God will bless you practice and make you very successful ...
